    Basically, you'd use your body to roll to the side that the arm is cross-faced and use the leverage of being on your side back to escape one, the tricky part after that is not getting pinned.

    Important rule changes for high school wrestling starting in 2024: 1. Takedowns - Takedowns are now worth 3 points instead of 2. 2. Backpoints - It used to be 2 seconds for 2 points and 5 seconds for 3 points. It has changed to 2 seconds for 2 points and 4 seconds for 4 points. 3. Out of bounds - If either wrestler has a point of contact inside the circle, they are considered in bounds. These rules will probably be adopted by youth wrestling as well. standing 3rd base is funny against a jiu jitsu practioner. If you a great wrestler and have 3rd base standing (two legs and one arm planted) don’t lean forward and pick up that third base arm cause if so you are going for a ride. Great wrestlers won’t lean forward when they have third base but 90% will and jj love it cause its a free back take, a free triangle, or an arm bar.

    Question. What do you teach as a defense to the mixer? I’ve been teaching my son to clamp down hard on the arm and circle to his feet. And also just clamp down hard and try to stall out a stalemate. Do you have any other defenses or counters? My son is a lanky 40 pounder and there is one particular kid who keeps catching him in a cement mixer from all types of random positions.

    Worst move to show a new/young wrestler. Because they are so effective at the Novice level. New wrestlers fall in love with them at the sacrifice of focusing on moves that work at higher levels of competition. They call them kiddie killers because they are so effective against young wrestlers. But they hinder the wrestlers long term progress. Same goes for headlocks. You are much better of focusing on fundamentals. 8U states champs are not that impressive. Think long term and help your wrestler be a HS state champ, and a college All American. Take it or leave it, but that is my opinion.

    • @WrestlingTournamentsDotCom
      @WrestlingTournamentsDotCom 2 месяца назад

      While I agree with your general premise, it should not be compared to a headlock. A headlock is a bad move to teach youth wrestlers because a headlock puts you in a worse position once it is defended. A cement mixer will stop working, but it will not put the wrestler out of position, it just won't work. Also, the finishing position that is entered (arm across the back and arm around the head) is a common position at all levels of wrestling, and athletes need it for their long-term development. Lastly, with a sport that has a 40+% attrition rate for first-year athletes, getting children to their first wins quickly is important. WrestlingTournaments.com managed 15,000 athletes this year, and we are always trying to get kids to their first win as fast as possible (their first loss too). Children need to develop a love for the sport before they commit to becoming the champion. When athletes attend a WAR Zone, we hand-pick all matches on the fly while viewing detailed analytics of each athlete's lifetime performance; this lets us better balance win/loss ratios and keeps children more engaged.

    • @TheKevinClarkson
      @TheKevinClarkson 2 месяца назад

      @@WrestlingTournamentsDotCom I agree with a lot of what you said. The only thing that I would say regarding the 40% attrition rate in wrestling first year. There is another stat that is less talked about. That is the high attrition rate overtime of successful youth wrestlers. Getting too much success too early has a similar effect. And it’s not usually the hard work that burns kids out, kids don’t mind hard work as long as they are having fun. What really burns kids out is feeling like they are disappointing their parents. A kid can take a cement mixers straight to a 6U and 8U state championshp. Unfortunately a lot of times the parent will now have a higher expectation on their child’s successful and expect or assume that their child should now be at the top of the state every year going forward. For one that puts a lot of pressure on a child every year until they graduate. But secondly, that level of success is harder to sustain each year that they get older, because the state level of competition is higher at each increased age bracket. So while the kid is a great wrestler, he knows he’s disappointing Dad. How often do you overhear at tournaments parent talking to their child coming down on them regarding a tough loss. That is worst to a child then the loss itself. Obviously the parent has their kids best interest at heart, but may not realize the effect. Obviously you know this already, because you mentioned in your comment that it’s important to match kids with losses as well. Don’t get me wrong, cement mixers are a great move, and should absolutely be taught to every wrestler. Maybe just not the first move they learn, it’s not hard to find wins for new wrestlers at a local novice tournament. It’s insane the number of kids who are spamming cement mixers at the 8U level, and those kids are usually the one who are rarely losing. Which as I mentioned above is a double edged sword. You are right though, cement mixers will not put you out of position. Well except some kids will purposely spin to the front purposely putting their selves out of back top position, just so they can attempt a mixer lol. Additionally, even headlocks are not bad moves when executed properly. Headlocks have a bad reputation nowadays but I know a kid (now adult) who won PA HS state championship and NCAA All American status who specialized in headlocks.

    • @WrestlingTournamentsDotCom
      @WrestlingTournamentsDotCom 2 месяца назад

      @@TheKevinClarkson I agree completely. My curriculum teaches the cement mixer early, but we replace it with more effective movements not much further down the line. Another thing to add is the unfortunate reality that wrestling has become a business. Clubs that win more often are better at recruiting than those that do not. The uneducated consumer is trying to buy wins now, and has less interest on winning an ncaa title in 15 years. The idea that a club teaching better technique will win in the long run is only true if it can prevent its top athletes from being poached.

    • @TheKevinClarkson
      @TheKevinClarkson 2 месяца назад

      @@WrestlingTournamentsDotCom you are 100% correct. Regarding business aspect, buying wins, recruiting, long term success poaching. TBH that why I prompt these conversations on RUclips every chance I get. People read comments. You and I just provided a lot of dialogue and insight during our conversation. We just provided a lot of narrative around the subject. A lot of people will read the comments and hopefully take something from it. And to be clear to anyone who is reading this, we are not saying stay away from clubs who are winning, obviously winning is not a bad thing. But what I am saying is pay close attention to the culture and values of the club that you have your child attending and make sure they share similar values. And make sure they value your child’s long term success. If they have the best 8U duals team in the area, but are very thin at older age brackets, that doesn’t mean it’s a red flag, but there is often a correlation. So just pay mind to their values.
